Just Serial How Does A Serial Protected Computer Game Determine Which Serials Are Valid And Which Aren't?

How does a serial protected computer game determine which serials are valid and which aren't? - just serial

For example: Suppose you have two legal copies of a video game, in various series. If you installed the game, regardless of the standard they use, because they are legal. So the game does know the difference between valid code or just write a series of random numbers and letters?

I think the use of an algorithm to determine with certainty legal "keys .... something like this character is a letter .... the next character is a number from 1-6, unless the person first d FM 7-0, if char first railroad, otherwise your letter WZ, etc. .... ...
I may be wrong, but it must be something ...
